Tolkien Brain Bender
Do you have a map of Middle-earth tatooed on your brain? Test your skills. The very best answer to each question, one hundred words or less, will be posted here with the author's name. This is your chance to show off your knowledge!

The Solution Here are the answers with their direct sources:

1. 9 March 1950:Ê "...the process of removing all my teeth began yesterday..." Source: The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter #125 to Sir Stanley Unwin dated 10 March 1950.

2. St. John, because Tolkien was born on the Octave of this particular saint:Ê "...and since I was born on the Octave of St. John the Evangelist, I take him as my patron..." Source: The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter #309 to Amy Ronald dated 2 January 1969.

3. The rich mer-king: "He [Artaxerxes] fell in love with the rich mer-king's elderly but lovely daughter, and they were married the next night." Source: Roverandom, Chapter 3, page 51.

4. Gálmód: "The wise speak only of what they know, Gríma son of Gálmód." Source: The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers, Book III, Chapter 6, 'The King of the Golden Hall,' page 118.

The Winner

Well, well, well! Now that all the results are in, we finally have a winner! The grand prize 7-volume Lord of the Rings British 'Millennium Edition' (with Compact Disc) goes to:

Paula DiSante, a.k.a. "WonderBroad"

Our winner confesses that her desperate search for answers nearly caused her eyeballs to pop right out of her head. Which means that I, at the very least, have done a good job of Brain Bending. Congrats to Paula and she will soon have her books coming along in the mail. :-)

Just for the record: We had many entries but only a small number were complete and correct. Out of the hundreds who entered only FOUR people got them all right and qualified for the drawing. Hrrrmmm.... Hoom....

Thank you all for participating in the First Anniversary of the Green Books. Namarie mellyn!

Much too hasty,
Quickbeam
